If you scroll down your news feed on two different days, you will see that abortion laws are constantly changing.

We put together a cheat sheet on the current laws in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with a list of at least two abortion providers per state. You can find out-of-state options for states without providers.

Stay informed

The Supreme Court of the United States overturned the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion on June 24, 2022, on the eve of the Fourth of July.

Individual states can decide their own abortion laws. More states may follow suit and ban or severely restrict abortion access.

The information in this article was accurate and up to date at the time of publication, but it’s possible the information has changed since. To learn more about your legal rights, you can message the Repro Legal Helpline via a secure online form or call 844-868-2812.

There are two types of abortion. Factors like:

  • How long have you been pregnant?
  • where you live (more on this below)
  • Personal preference.

Medication abortion

Medication abortions are a reliable option if you’re less than 12 weeks pregnant.

Taking two prescription medications at home is a non surgical approach. The lining of your uterus is shed when you take the medication.

Surgical abortion

A surgical abortion entails going to a clinic for a procedure that empties the contents of your uterus.

This can be done in two different ways.

  • Aspiration. This is an option if you’re less than 16 weeks pregnant. First, you’ll be given medication for relaxation and pain relief. Your clinician will then numb your cervix and insert a small suction tube.
  • Dilation and evacuation. This is an option if you’re more than 16 weeks pregnant. It’s similar to aspiration, but your clinician will also dilate your cervix. Using a combination of surgical tools and suction, they’ll remove the products of pregnancy from your uterus.

Glossary

The language used in abortion laws can be just as confusing as the laws themselves.

Here’s a breakdown of some common lingo you might come across:

  • Last menstrual period (LMP). This is the first day of your last period. This is the date used to help determine gestational age (how far along the pregnancy is).
  • Viability. This refers to the point at which a fetus could survive outside the uterus. It typically occurs between 20 and 24 weeks.
  • Life or health endangerment. Many states only allow abortion after a certain point in cases of life or health endangerment. This means the pregnancy poses a risk to your life or your physical or mental health. Some states only allow for exceptions in cases of life or physical (not mental) health endangerment.
  • Fetal anomaly. This refers to any kind of structural changes or developmental issues with the fetus. Some states that prohibit abortion after a certain point make exceptions for pregnancies involving a fetal anomaly.

When on the hunt for an abortion provider, make sure to avoid crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs).

Using a combo of false information and shaming tactics, these centers aim to keep people from accessing abortion services.

Luckily, you can make sure the clinic you’re en route to isn’t a CPC by entering the location into the Crisis Pregnancy Center Map. Phew.

Some states require abortion counseling. Some states require providers to make false claims during these sessions.

Some of the claims you may hear during your consultation are shown here.

1. Abortion increases your risk for breast cancer: False

“Some states require that providers tell abortion seekers that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer, but this is not true,” says Dr. Jennifer Karlin, a board certified family physician and research fellow with the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

There has been no research showing a correlation between abortion and breast cancer risk.

2. Abortion affects your fertility: False

Whether or not you’ve had an abortion has no impact on your ability to get pregnant in the future. It also does not increase your risk for complications during any future pregnancies.

3. Abortion causes lasting trauma: False

Some states require clinicians to inform you that having an abortion can result in a condition called post-abortion syndrome, which is said to cause lasting emotional distress, similar to PTSD.

People experience intense emotions before and after an abortion. There is no evidence to suggest that these effects are long lasting or affect your well-being. Post-abortion syndrome is not a medically recognized condition.

4. Abortion is reversible: False

“If you don’t take all the pills or take a high dose of the hormones, the abortion can be stopped halfway through.”

Both of these claims are false.

5. Abortion causes fetal pain: It depends

This is a topic that is debated around abortion.

Most experts agree that a fetus can’t feel pain in the first 24 weeks, which is the time period in which most abortions are done.

Some suggest this may be possible as early as 12 weeks, but there isn’t evidence to support this.

You are reading this piece to see what options are available in your state and how to find a provider.

“You will find details about your state’s laws in this section. You can find a list of providers in each state’s top, middle, and bottom portions.”

However, as Rebecca Lea, founder and director of I need ana.com — one of the most comprehensive search engines for people seeking abortion providers on the internet — says, “This kind of information goes out of date pretty darn quickly as clinics close and others open.”

Our recommendation? The list is below. Double check that they are still open by calling or using a search on the internet.

You can use one of the online abortion providers.

Prioritize your privacy

Depending on your location, there may be legal risks to self-managed at-home medication abortion, in-clinic abortion, or crossing state lines to access abortion.

This means that discretion and privacy are of paramount importance.

If you can, tell as few people as you can about your decision to end the pregnancy.

Clear any internet search, private message, or phone call history that might connect this to you.
