A pinguecula is a benign growth on your eye. Pingueculae is when there are more than one. The white part of your eye is covered by a thin layer of tissue called the conjunctiva.

The limbus is where the clear cornea meets the conjunctiva.

Pingueculae are found in middle-aged and older people. Most of the time, these growths are not necessary to be removed.

A pinguecula is usually triangular in shape. It is a small patch that is close to your eye. The transparent layer over your eyes is called your cornea. Your eye is made of colored iris.

Pingueculae can grow on the other side of your eye, but they are more common on the side of your nose.

Pingueculae can become large, but it is rare and occurs at a very slow rate.

A pinguecula forms when the tissue in your conjunctiva changes. Some of the bumps have something in them, such as fat, calcium or both.

The elastin fibers within the conjunctival tissue are damaged by the long-term sun exposure. Think of rubber bands that are taught. Dust and wind can cause a change in tissue.

As people get older, pingueculae becomes more common.

A pinguecula can make your eye feel dry. It can feel like you have something in your eye. The eye can become red and itch. Mild or severe symptoms of pinguecula can be present.

“An eye doctor should be able to diagnose this condition based on the pinguecula’s appearance and location.”

Pingueculae and pterygia are growths that form on your eye. The singular term for pterygia is pterygium. These two conditions share a few similarities, but there are also notable differences.

Pingueculae and pterygia are benign and grow near the eye. Exposure to the sun, wind, and other harsh elements are linked to them.

“Pterygia don’t look like pinguecula. There are different colors of phlegmygia. They are either round or oval.”

The growth of pingueculae is more likely to occur over the eye. A former pinguecula that grows on the corneal surface has now become a pterygium.

“Unless it causes pain, you don’t need treatment for a pinguecula. If your eye hurts, a doctor can give you eye drops or an eye cream.”

“If you don’t like the look of the pinguecula, you can talk to a doctor. In some cases, growth needs to be removed. When a pinguecula is considered, surgery is considered.”

  • This can affect your vision.
  • It causes extreme pain when you try to wear contact lens.
  • Even after applying eye drops or ointments, it is still very sore.

“A pinguecula doesn’t usually cause problems. Pingueculae can grow back after surgery, but it doesn’t usually lead to problems. Your doctor can give you medication or use surface radiation to help prevent this.”

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you are more likely to develop pingueculae. Wearing sunglasses can help prevent growths.

“You should wear sunglasses that block the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. sunglasses help protect your eyes from wind and other elements”

Artificial tears might help prevent pingueculae. When working in a dry and dusty environment, you should wear protective eyewear.
